Communication systems (B.Sc./M.Sc.)

The degree Communication Systems focuses on the design of networked and distributed systems from a computer science point of view. The technical foundations (primarily in electrical engineering and information technology) are also a focal point. Today communication systems are omnipresent and can be found on many different technical levels: internet, mobile telephony, social networks (Facebook etc.), Skype, Twitter... Nearly all IT systems today have a networked and distributed structure. For this reason profound knowledge in the construction and operation of communication systems is of high practical relevance. In addition to the engineering-related development of communication systems, a good command of the non-functional aspects such as performance, security and the quality of service of communication systems is also a vital aspect of the degree Communication Systems.

Students doing this degree learn the technological background of communication systems as well as the systematical design and operation of these complex hard- and software systems. Students learn engineering-related design techniques on all levels of system design. The different levels of abstraction become clear from a system-oriented point of view. Non-functional aspects of communication systems are understood in their mutual dependent behaviour towards functional aspects as well as among each other.
